Methods of Accessing Mezzanines

Accessing Mezzanines Blog Header

We provide a range of mezzanine access solutions that are applicable for use in both the home and for office/industrial use. But what is a mezzanine? Essentially this is an additional storey/space between the floor and ceiling of a room, perhaps in the form of a raised platform or enlarged landing area that overlooks the room or stairwell below.

Mezzanine Access Solution

Mezzanines For Home Use

Many people opt for a mezzanine installation in the home to create valuable floor space, where alternatives such as a loft conversion may not be applicable.

There are multiple ways that a home mezzanine level can be accessed which are available on our website. For instance, an Aluminium Superior Loft adder can be combined with a Mezzanine Floor Resting Bracket (available as a custom option), this provides a robust, stable access solution that feels safe to climb. Alternatively, Timber Shelf Ladders could be used. Timber shelf ladders can be stained, painted or varnished to suit your requirements which would provide an attractive design element to your house.

Another example would be a Rolling Ladder, this would be a beneficial way to access a mezzanine floor because it could be easily moved and tucked away when not in use, saving the user space keeping the area underneath the mezzanine clear. If this was your selected access solution we would need to know when being used to access a mezzanine so that the top step can be at the right height.

The benefit of being able to hide away the mezzanine access ladder is also present with a portable access ladder, specifically the Special Portable Loft Access Ladder which can be unhooked from the supplied special rail bracket, completely removed and stored away, as they say; out of sight out of mind. This is heavily advantageous for mezzanines located in small rooms, perhaps an apartment or flat, where additional floor/storage space can be created without jeopardising any space below by having a fixed ladder present.

Industrial Use Mezzanines

Mezzanines are also common for industrial use, many warehouses will have a mezzanine for additional storage or perhaps for an office space. Some of the domestic access solutions could also be used in this context. The Aluminium Superior Loft Ladder with mezzanine bracket is applicable and an Aluminium Shelf Ladder could also work well as both provide a safe way of accessing the mezzanine, key for health and safety in your working environment.

Other alternative methods could also be used, for example, warehouse steps (such as the Fixed Single-Sided Machine Steps) that have an exit to the side or rear would be perfect for industrial use due to the heavy-duty, robust nature of these products. Similarly, a Klime-ezee Access Platform (KAP) offers similar benefits as a warehouse step - with an extra-long platform, side platform access and super easy manoeuvrability, it is a favourable form of mezzanine steps. The 500 KG Safe Working Load means heavy goods can be moved up to the mezzanine floor again without jeopardizing the safety of the user.

A final recommendation for industrial mezzanine access would be a Bespoke Vertical Access Ladder, this offers a method of height access that is designed and manufactured to measurements that would fit your exact needs. We have helped our customers do this many times before. If you are looking for an example of this application please take a look at our Wilson Bros of Sheffield Case Study. Wilson Bros were working with Doncaster Market to provide access above market stalls. In short, they provided us with significantly positive feedback and were extremely satisfied, if you would like to read about this in more detail please feel free to view the blog post here.

We hope that this blog has given you a general idea of how mezzanines are a great addition to both the home and industrial working environments. We also hope that we have given you sufficient recommendations for ways of accessing a mezzanine conveniently, practically and most of all safely!
