Timely reminder to us in the UK to use a decent set of ladder clamps, this story is for New Zealand and illustrates the dangers.

A mother and her two young children escaped unhurt when a ladder fell off a passing truck and crashed into their car.

The stepladder fell from a northbound truck on the expressway between Napier and Hastings, bounced on the road then smashed into the southbound car.

Police said it became wedged in the front bumper of the vehicle, driven by a 35-year-old women with her to daughters, aged 5 and 5 months.

The incident happened about 2.30pm yesterday.

Sergeant Clint Adamson said the truck didn't stop, and it was unclear whether the driver realised the ladder had fallen.

He appealed for the driver to come forward, or for anyone else who had seen the accident to contact police.

"This is a timely reminder to all drivers to ensure that their load is properly secured," Mr Adamson said.
