    • Do I need to have a ladder register?
    • As far as we are concerned the short answer is 'yes you do need a ladder register.

The Work at Height Regulations (WAHR) 2005 stipulate that regular ladder inspections should be conducted by a competent person for all work at height equipment and that the records of these formal ladder inspections are legally required to be made available to a health and safety inspector on request. These ladder inspection records must be stored in such a way that they are accessible but protected from interfering or being tampered with by others.

Since you have to be able to identify which ladder, or piece of access equipment relates to which ladder inspection record you need a ladder register and a system to keep all the information organised. This will allow you to show that the ladder inspections that you have completed apply to a specific ladder. This is important because the ladder register also contains details about the ladder, such as class, location, etc that show beyond doubt that it is the inspected ladder, this can be important if the asset reference is somehow missing or unreadable on the ladder.
